Bernd Melichar: China-Roman von Radka Denemarková: Das große rote Buch. Kleine Zeitung, 15. 1. 2022, pp. 76–77.
“Hours of Lead” by the Czech author Radka Denemarková is a literary-political unmasking of China.
It is probably no coincidence that this book is visually reminiscent of the “Mao Bible”, the notorious little red book of the Great Chairman of the People’s Republic of China. And this novel by Radka Denemarková, which is not only important in terms of length (almost 900 pages), will also be remembered; as a big red book, in which the Czech writer portrays and unmasks a country and system at the highest literary level, in which capitalism and totalitarianism enter into an outwardly perfect symbiosis. “This society in China combines the worst of capitalism with the worst of communism,” the author said in a recent interview.
