The Czech writer Radka Denemarková on her new novel “Hours of Lead”, indifference about the Chinese police state and new forms of dictatorship

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung calls Radka Denemarková the “great taboo-breaker of contemporary Czech literature”. The Prague-based author, essayist and translator of German literature has been awarded Magnesia Litera, the most important Czech literary prize, four times. She received the Usedom Literature Prize in 2011 for her novel Money from Hitler, which deals with the expulsion of Germans, and the Swiss Leuk Literature Prize in 2019 for the novel A Contribution to the History of Joy. Her books have been translated into 23 languages. Her latest work, Hours of Lead (in German translation Stunden aus Blei), will be presented at the Stifterhaus in Linz on February 10th.
