There were of 61 applications from 29 countries in total. In the explanatory statement of the jury:
“The Prague writer Radka Denemarková not only convinces with her versatile work, ranging from novels, dramas, books, essays, dramaturgical and literary works to translations, but also the special quality of her writing, the themes she chooses and the form she finds, that make her an exceptional literary person in the whole European context.
On the one hand, she deals with problems of the individual in today’s society, on the other hand she tries to free the view of the past from blind spots, repressive mechanisms and tabooing. This results in a differentiated analysis of historical events, the effects of which are still felt today. From this comprehensive perspective, any seemingly national history becomes an all-European affair that affects all of us.”
Among the authors who were selected by the jury were also Liliana Corobca (Romania) and Erica Zingano (Brazil).
The scholarship will be “handed over” by the Iraquian-German writer Najem Walli, in the frame of the reading ob both authors in September 2017, in Literaturhaus Graz, Elisabethstraße 30, 8010 Graz.
