Book presentation: Hours of Lead in Vienna | YouTube

›EUROPA.LITERATUR‹ Radka Denemarková presents “Hours of Lead”. Austrian Literary Society, Vienna, 3 February 2022. Moderated by Ludger Hagedorn.

Radka Denemarková presented her new novel “Hours of Lead” in conversation with Ludger Hagedorn. Denemarková is considered one of the most important Czech authors. Her novels have already won many awards. In her current novel, she takes a critical look at the People’s Republic of China and the fates of those living there. Her own stay and the oppression she saw inspired her to write “Hours of Lead”. She herself says that it is her task as an author: “to give the victims a voice”.

Denemarková has already been awarded prestigious prizes for her critical arguments, but she has also been banned from entering the People’s Republic. Ludger Hagedorn, who is a Permanent Fellow at the IWM (Institute for Human Sciences) and led the evening, showed that a thread of taboo-breaking runs through Denemarková’s work. In earlier novels, such as “Money from Hitler”, the Czech author dedicated herself to the voices of the oppressed and repressed.

Hagedorn and Denemarková spoke about her writing, her time in China and social and political problems in China and Europe. The author also read passages from her novel.

This event was a cooperation with the IWM, the Czech Centre, the Moravian National Library, and the Czech Literary Centre.
